(1) Obligatory Repentance (Wajib Tauba):
This is repentance that becomes necessary after committing an obligatory act of sin or abandoning an obligatory duty.
(2) Recommended Repentance (Mustahabb Tauba):
This is repentance for recommended actions that are disliked or for voluntary actions that are not entirely appropriate. This type of repentance is recommended for those seeking spiritual purification and nearness to Allah.
Sincere Repentance
This is a pure and genuine repentance which is free from the defects and flaws of sin. It stems from all sins without exception, and nothing is left out in it. The one who performs it acts upon the path of truth along with determination and sincerity, wherein they do not fear anyone except Allah. Fear of Allah, His greatness, fear of His punishment, and hope for His rewards draw one toward repentance. When a person reaches this state, all their sins are forgiven.
