Husbands Praising Their Wives!

Some poems are presented under this title to soften the hearts of unjust husbands. These are verses from poets whose wives died, and they eulogized them with tender poetry mixed with tears and grief… Among the famous poets who eulogized their wives was Jarir, who composed a tender poem after his wife’s death, which included:

If not for modesty, tears would overcome me
And I would visit your grave, as loved ones are visited
My heart is distracted by grief that overwhelms me
While your young children with amulets are small
May the chosen angels pray upon you
And the good and righteous ones as well
Companions do not remain together forever
As night and day repeatedly pass over them

Al-Tughra’i praising his wife:

If after you I can swallow water when thirsty
Then may I never drink anything but bitterness and patience
And if I look at any beauty in this world
Since you disappeared from me, then may I never enjoy sight
You were my companion in fresh youth, then departed
As they all depart, and now life has no purpose
You both preceded me, and if I had a choice after you
I would be the first to follow your tracks

A Bedouin woman said, eulogizing her husband:

We were like two branches from the same tree, watered
For a while with the best nourishment for trees to grow
Until it was said our branches had grown tall
And our fruits ripened and the harvest was plentiful
Then the calamities of time destroyed one of us
For time preserves nothing and spares nothing
We were like stars of the night with a moon among them
Dispelling darkness, then from among them a moon fell
